Good morning!
I agree that it is always a good idea to look and see what data you do have right now, before developing a new assessment. Places that I usually go to look are past event assessments/surveys, exit survey from our graduating students if there's any, or focus groups/meeting notes with our student leaders.
If you are hoping to develop a brand-new needs assessment, a combination of open-ended questions (gauging needs and wants) plus some multiple choice/ranking (as an evaluation + educational opportunity) on current offerings can gather some helpful insights. I also lean on focus groups and some interactive activities (like putting stickers/post-it notes to answer one question when they pass by an area or stop by for advising) more these two years.

Just a thought, if any of your campuses use Campus Labs, you can query to find out if there are pre-existing surveys there. Schools can share surveys on that platform. Institutional research and or your Student Affairs area may have information if your campus is on this platform.
