Hi all, I'm going to lead a small group of up to 4 people this summer reading a book that was suggested to me for professional development. We've ordered 4 copies and I hope they will be here in the coming week or so. The book is College Success for Students of Color: A Culturally Empowered, Assets-Based Approach. More details are available here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.tcpress.com/college-success-for-stud... .>.
The audience for the book is different than what I would maybe normally use for a reading group in that it is written with students as the intended audience. That is, though, what I like about this book and the value I think it is for us to read it. My hope is that as we would read through it, it helps us think about the ways in which we are communicating and using wording about student success that are both asset-based and approaches that resonate with students themselves. I believe this also really aligns with our Ecology of Validation approach that we're embedding at UNL. It seems to be a fairly easy read, so my hope is that the group I'll convene this summer would read the book throughout the summer and we'll have 3 meetings to discuss what we've read. If it works well, I'll continue an additional group in the fall.
Let me know if you are interested and I'll let you know when the books get in.
Thanks.
