Utilization of probiotics to compete with Costridioides difficile for nutrient-niches in a variety of in vitro contexts

April Johnson
Advisor: Dr. Jennifer Auchtung

April Johnson is a master’s student in the Department of Food Science and Technology, advised by Dr. Jennifer Auchtung. Her research focuses on colonization resistance mechanisms to Clostridioides difficile. C. difficile is the number one cause of hospital associated infections in the U.S. due to its ability to colonize and persist in the colons of patients on antibiotics. During her research, she evaluated potential probiotics on their ability to reduce and compete with C. difficile for nutrient space. In 2021, April received her bachelor’s degree in food science and technology with highest distinction from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
