Hi team,
My stomach isn’t feeling well this morning, so I think that I’m going to skip our group meeting. Which means that we will need to celebrate Christina’s birthday next week (I figured 1 month late vs. 3 weeks late isn’t a big difference, right?).
If Portia is ready to present and wants to do her presentation you can have group meeting without me. I have a bag of yummy popcorn in my office that you can use as the group meeting snack today.
If you would rather have time to catch up on other things, we can wait for Portia’s presentation and we will have the popcorn in two weeks.
I’ll let you discuss it amongst yourselves to decide.

Hi group,
Rico, from Keyence, has offered to do a training for you and Cora’s microscope. It will be on zoom, but he should be able to walk you through everything that our scope currently does and point out additional options (I can’t guarantee that we have money to buy the additional options, but let me know if there is something that would be helpful).
Can you talk to each other and find a time that would work for everyone interested to participate? Giving him a few dates/times would be great (if someone can email me with the options I will see when I’m free too and pass it on to him).
Thanks,
Iverson

Hello group,
We will be meeting on Mondays this semester at 12 – 2 pm in room 145. We will start the meeting with announcements and a research overview and then have 1 hour of writing time from 1 – 2 pm. For undergrads that don’t have writing you can choose to skip this part of the meeting.
Our tentative schedule is attached. Let me know if you have a conflict with your assigned date.

Does anyone want to go over to City Campus to look at the tools and toolboxes and see if there is anything useful for our lab? (see below)
Undergrads – if you are on City Campus for classes it would be great if you could swing by (you could always put our name on something and have one of us with a car pick it up).

Hello COE faculty,
In case you are interested but the previous email slipped past you, there are still some tools available for allocation to labs (extending the pickup deadline through the end of the first week of classes). Please see Max in the Kiewit Hall Garage if interested.
Thanks,

Subject: tools available for teaching and research labs
Dear COE faculty,
Long time friend of the college Robert W. Brightfelt donated many of his personal tools to the College of Engineering. The Garage received the equipment and is looking to distribute some of it to departmental teaching labs and faculty research labs throughout the college.
Items become available in the Garage (southeast corner of KH, 1st floor) beginning Jan. 13 at 9:00 AM.
Any tools that remain unclaimed after Jan. 17 at 5:00 PM will be sent to surplus.
Please note:
* The tools are organized and labeled as in the attached photos.
* Individual tools can be removed starting Jan. 13; toolboxes (limit 1 per lab) can be "claimed" by placing a sticky note with faculty or department name but should not be removed until Jan. 17.
* Please only take what you need.
* Please avoid breaking up sets (i.e., don't take one wrench or socket from a complete set) - use your best judgment as to which items should remain together.
* Removal is your responsibility; bring a box or cart if planning to take more than a couple of items.
* Please do not bring more help (e.g., graduate students) than needed to carry away the items you are claiming - we want to avoid chaos/congestion on Monday morning. 🙂
Thanks,
The COE Garage

Hello everyone,
I’m trying to set up a time for our group meeting this semester. I’ve made a when2meet poll (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.when2meet.com/?28256099-ZD4N2__;!!P… ), please fill it out with days/times that work for you. If you have meetings one Friday a month that will get in the way of coming to group meeting, please mark yourself as available and email me separately to let me know (that is just one example).
We will not meet during spring break and can determine if there are other weeks/days that are not good for meeting as the semester progresses.
We are going to try to meet for 2 hrs each week, with 1 hr for writing (if undergrads don’t have anything to work on they can skip this time – probably most weeks undergrads can use this as study time or not come for this part) and 1 hr for research updates and information sharing.
As you know, I like to bring snacks to our meetings, so if you have any food allergies or foods that you avoid please email me to let me know (even if you think I already know, this will help me to remember – for example, I know that Trisam doesn’t eat some types of meat, but I’m not totally sure of what types).
Please fill this out as soon as possible, so that we can get our schedule set!
Thanks,
Iverson

Hello team,
I have picked up some wood ornaments that I think would be fun to paint for our tree. I would like to have us paint our ornaments and maybe have snacks on Tuesday during our normal meeting time. So if you want to bring snacks, painting supplies, and holiday cheer that would be great!
We will plan to do this in our office so that we don’t get in trouble for painting in the conference room. We can even start early if some of you can’t stay for the 3 pm portion of the meeting.
I’ll see you then,
Iverson

Hi group,
We are going to move the confocal out of 265 and up to 365 so that we have room for our new confocal from Photon.
This is going to be a multi-step process.
1. We need to make sure that the area in 365 is clear and ready for the confocal.
2. We need to move the microscope components over to the bench in room 265.
3. We will bring the computer and computer table up to 365.
4. The movers will move the desk/tables upstairs to 365.
5. We will bring the microscope upstairs to 365.
Ivon – can you organize this please?
I’m hoping to get steps 1 – 3 done before Thanksgiving so that the movers can come at any point in December to do step 4.
If you need help with any of this please let me know, I’m happy to help (maybe Monday morning)?
Thanks,
Iverson

Hello team,
I have a big assignment due in my junior level class on Thursday. Multiple students have asked if I can extend my office hours today to assist them. Therefore, I would like to change the plan for today’s group meeting. Can you please work on your writing for the entire time today? Maybe for the second half you can read each other’s and make editing suggestions.
I’m also going to cancel next week’s meeting (at least for me – you can meet if you want to). I’m going to drive home on Tuesday afternoon next week and take Wednesday off.
After Thanksgiving we will meet again and we will have everyone share their information from the conferences that they attended. It will be a good chance to tell everyone about the sessions you went to, what you learned and what ideas you have for research going forward.
Thanks,
Iverson

Hello lab,
Here are a couple of updates/reminders:
1. If you are a graduate student or post doc, you are expected to send my your work plan each week by 9 am on Monday morning. Your work plan should be a word document that is saved as ‘date work plan name’. The date is the YYMMDD configuration that we use. Your name can be your initials, your first name or your last name. You can have spaces or underscores between the items, I don’t care. But I do want to be able to just hit save and save a version of your document without having to rename it (this might not take time for one document but it is a silly way for me to waste time when doing it for multiple documents).
2. The person to move the desks/table between 258 and 264 will be here Wednesday morning. Please make sure that everything is off of the table and desks that will be moved by Tuesday night.
3. The people that are moving the fridge/freezer, tables, blow-out hood are likely coming tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 8 am. I will be here for part of the time, but the graduate students and post doc need to be here if possible because we will need to unload items from the freezer for the move and then load the freezer back up. Please move all items out of the fridge by tonight – they can go into the new fridge for now. If this changes I will let you know as soon as I hear from the company (they suggested coming tomorrow morning and I agreed, but haven’t received a confirmation yet).
4. I will put post it notes on the wall and items that are being moved to help with the move, but if you are unsure where items are going please ask me.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Iverson

Hi team,
My niece is playing in the semi-final state soccer game today at 1:30 pm. This is during my office hours, so I might need to stop and talk to students, but my plan is to watch the game online.
If anyone wants to watch with me you are invited to do so, just come by at any point between 1:30 – 3 pm (I do tend to yell at the screen a lot, so be prepared).

We are ready to move to our new/bigger lab space!
We will move out of room 257 and into 263. We will keep 263A (the microscope/tissue culture room) as it is. We will move things down from the third floor to room 257. We will only get the chemical hood and the partial bench in 257 for a limited time (until someone else needs the space).
The Kievit lab should be moved out of 263 by Monday. So I would like us to get things organized on Monday/Tuesday. On Tuesday we can organize the new lab space as a group. Then on Wednesday we can start moving things. We will get help on the actual move of large items, but if things are delicate we might want to move them ourselves.
Ivon – please organize everyone on Monday so that we can have a smooth move.
