This looks like a fun technology. It might be interesting to learn more about it.

Reproducible 3D Cell Culture made Easy

Bio-Blocks™: Easy as Pipetting!

Observe the consistent, tissue-mimetic microenvironment

Bio-Blocks are Cell Agnostic

Use your favorite cells with our Bio-Block culture system — to start just pipet your cells onto the Bio-Block and let gravity and cell culture media do the rest. Gravity aids the flow of media through the microchannel network, allowing cells the opportunity to adhere to internal surfaces throughout the Bio-Block.

Caption (above): An illustration showing a general approach to seeding cells when using the Bio-Block culture system. Left panel, a six-well plate with three wells containing 4X connected but unseeded Bio-Blocks (gray).  Middle panel, a zoomed in view of a single well containing unseeded Bio-Blocks.  A pipet tip containing cells suspended in cell culture media (pink) is shown above the one of the connected Bio-Blocks. The red, diamond-shaped arrow is the path followed when dispensing the cells. Right panel, seeded blocks (pink) after a 10 minute waiting period once the media from the middle panel was dispensed. This process can be repeated by collecting and re-dispensing the cell culture media that collects in the bottom of the well.

Bio-Blocks are Media Agnostic

A Bio Block in a six-well plate filled with media being manipulated by a set of specialized forceps.

Use your preferred media! Bio-Blocks are compatible with all tested media types, giving you the freedom to seed and maintain your cells however you desire. Once adhered, cells will begin to build the complex structures they are naturally inclined to produce but typically prevented from building in 2D cultures. Simply pipet out the old media and add the new at your normal intervals to keep the cells thriving.

Successful & Simple Cell Seeding

Bio-Blocks are your new go-to substrate for lasting 3D cell growth. The results speak for themselves: In our years of culturing in Bio-Blocks, we have never seen a necrotic core, we have grown stem cells for 6 months, and many labs have grown primary cells for well over a month before fixing the cells. So what are you waiting for? Start growing physiologically relevant and healthier cells today with Bio-Blocks.

Caption (above): The images on the left and right are of the top surface of four connected Bio-Blocks.  Dotted, black lines separate the 4 Bio-Blocks, and text labels for each Bio-Block are in the center of each image.  Bio-Blocks were seeded at 250,000 cells per Bio-Block, which is equal to 1 million cells per well. The Bio-Block on the left is just 3-days post seeding — cells are proliferating in the microchannel network, but may not yet be abundantly visible on all of the outer surfaces of the Bio-Block.  The Bio-Block on the right is 7-days post seeding — cells are more abundant throughout the microchannel network and increasingly visible on the top surfaces of the Bio-Blocks.

We have automated the whole system and it’s scalable.

We can load the equivalent of 72 T-flasks in 10 minutes.
