Dear friends of Medieval and Renaissance Studies,
I hope that you will join us next Tuesday (4/28) at 4 p.m. for an end-of year celebration. We will have live music! Sweet Will and the Saucy Jacks<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.facebook.com/SweetWillAndTheSaucyJa…>, an ensemble specializing in pop music settings of Early Modern poetry. The band includes Professor Kelly Stage on percussion, alumnus Ray Collier on bajo sexto, and Emeritus Professor Stephen Buhler on mandolin and vocals.
We will also have fun door prizes, snacks, and a craft: DIY “stained glass.” All are welcome — bring a friend!

Finding Shakespeare: A Forensic Archaeo-biography"
Thursday, April 9, 5:30, Sheldon Art Museum.
Co-sponsored by Medieval/Renaissance Studies
William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time and one of the most important and influential people who has ever lived. His written works have been translated into more than 100 languages, and these are performed around the world. There is also an enduring desire to learn more about the man himself. Countless books and articles have been written about Shakespeare’s life. These have been based primarily on the scholarly analysis of his works and the official record associated with him and his family. Shakespeare’s popularity and legacy endures, despite uncertainties in his life story and debate surrounding his authorship and identity. In March 2010, in collaboration with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, forensic investigators from the Centre of Archaeology of the University of Huddersfield (UK) started to lift the turf on the site of Shakespeare’s family home. New Place had been an absent presence on the corner of Chapel Street and Chapel Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon, for two hundred and fifty years. This was the beginning of the ongoing Finding Shakespeare Project spanning many sites associated with the Bard. Over the next fifteen years, the Huddersfield archaeologists would utilize state of the art technologies in the quest to shine a light on the life of Shakespeare. This would take the team on a memorable journey looking at aspects of his family life, social status, his burial, and where his remains are today. This talk will provide a summary of this work, including detailed methodological approaches and the results of the work to date.

Dear everyone,
Just a reminder that this very cool exhibit opens tomorrow during First Friday!
Friday, April 3 April First Friday: 'Crown and Stage'
Celebrate the opening of the exhibition "Crown & Stage: The Monarchy and Shakespeare in Quilts" during First Fridays at the International Quilt Museum!
Co-Curated by Dr. Carole Levin, Willa Cather Emerita Professor of History at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, "Crown & Stage" explores how quilts and other forms of material culture traveled beyond the playhouse and palace. This exhibition features quilts honoring British queens, Shakespeare’s words stitched in fabric, and contemporary objects that reinterpret these icons.
At 5:30 p.m., join us in the IQM Reception Hall for a special reading of "Creatively Expanding the Premodern." Written by Levin, Marguerite A. Tassi, Christine Stewart-Nuñez, and Julia Griffin, this book highlights the stories of women from premodern history and literature through poems, plays, and essays. The authors will also be available for a book signing following the reading.
Remember First Fridays are always free. These events are held on the first Friday of each month from 4-7 p.m.
