'Maintaining the Realm: the Medieval Administrators of the Holy Roman Empire' By Dr. Aaron Patee, UNL College of Architecture Thursday, March 6 5pm Bailey Library, Andrews 2nd Floor Free! Dr. Pattee’s expertise includes Architecture, Anthropology, and Digital Humanities. His talk on Thursday will focus primarily on history, however, as it will be mainly an exploration of two families and their proceedings from historical charters. He will share his findings from the archives in his most recent research. Dr. Patee studied for his MA and Certificate in Digital Humanities here at UNL and then completed a PhD at the Institute for European Art History and the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at Heidelberg University. Recently he completed a post-doc at the Institute for Art History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany, and some of his most recent work has involved the application of AI in architectural element identification in 2d and 3d modeling. He is an expert on 12th/13th century ministerialis castles in the German Palatinate, and on the application of 3D photogrammetric and laserscan models, GIS based spatial analyses, and a graph-database of over 700 medieval charters. We’re excited to get to hear this research from Dr. Patee, who complete his MA and Certificate in Digital Humanities here at UNL in 2016. Since then, he’s completed his PhD at the Institute for European Art History and the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at Heidelberg University. He is an expert on 12th/13th century ministerialis castles in the German Palatinate, and on the application of 3D photogrammetric and laserscan models, GIS based spatial analyses, and a graph-database of over 700 medieval charters. Recently he completed a post-doc at the Institute for Art History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany, and his most recent work has involved the application of AI in architectural element identification in 2d and 3d modeling. Hi Everyone! I just wanted to say (though you may have already heard) that tomorrow (2/12) is the official kick off for this year’s Glow Big Red Fundraising Day here at UNL. You already know this if you’re part of the university or you’ve been tracking the MRST Facebook page. We’ll be doing some more informative advertising tomorrow, but for now, I just wanted to send out a more detailed message explaining our fundraising goals. This year, we have a matching fund opportunity if we get 15 donors, and donations can be any amount. So, any little bit helps. In the past year, we’ve sponsored five academic talks, two fun events aimed primarily at undergraduates, facilitated student research, and enabled a student to do special programming at the Newberry Library. We’ve sent students on with their PhDs and welcomed a new MA student too. We’re planning a few more talks for spring, including this year’s Mary Martin McLaughlin Lecture. The film is a classic: Katharine Hepburn in her Oscar winner role as Eleanor of Aquitaine takes on Peter O’Toole as Henry II as they struggle over the future of the English kingdom, making war on each other and their children (including Anthony Hopkins as Prince Richard and Nigel Terry as Prince John). Hello Everyone! Remember that today is the day to see Il Moro, the acclaimed short film about Duke Alessandro de’ Medici by director Daphne Di Cinto Botti, right here on campus, for free! The screening is today at 5:30 in Andrews 117. Afterward, Ms. Botti herself will be ready to talk with you and take your questions. Please come! Il Moro A screening of the 2024 short film Q & A with special guest: Director Daphne Di Cinto Nov 18. 5:30-7:30 Andrews 117 City Campus Free Il Moro, or The Moor, follows the true story of sixteenth century Duke Alessandro de’ Medici of Florence, the illegitimate son of an enslaved woman of African descent and Pope Clement VII. The film invites viewers to broaden their understanding of history and who makes it, as well as to question who attempts to rewrite it. Writer and director Daphne Di Cinto was inspired to tell Alessandro’s story because of its parallels to the struggles of modern Black-Europeans. In her director’s statement on the film, Di Cinto explains: “In Italy, Black-face and the N-word are still allowed on TV and people who were born and raised in Italy to two immigrant parents are still denied the right to citizenship.” While based on historical events from the 16th century, Di Cinto affirms that “Alessandro’s story seeks to shine a light on both our continued presence in the continent throughout history and to the still-existing consequences of colonialism today.” Il Moro was longlisted for the 2024 Academy Awards in the category of “Best Live Action Short Film”. It has received several film accolades worldwide, including being named the winner of the 2022 Black Italian Movie Awards, the 2022 Integrazione Film Festival, and the 2021 Fabrique du Cinéma Awards. The film also won “Best Short Narrative” at the 2022 Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and “Best Acting Ensemble” at the 2022 Venezia Shorts Film Festival. Hi everyone! This is a reminder that Dr. Charles Parker, a professor of history at Saint Louis University, will be speaking TOMORROW, October 29, at 5:30 p.m. in the Dudley Bailey Library. We hope to see you there! “Geographies of Salvation: Sacred Landscapes, Conversion, and Early Modern Religion, 1400-1800” Dr. Charles Parker, professor of history at Saint Louis University October 29, 2024, 5:30 PM Dudley Bailey Library Andrews Hall, 2nd Floor City Campus Dr. Parker’s new research focuses on conflicts over space, including sacred space, in early modern missionary encounters. Parker’s talk will focus on his work examining the expansion of Christianity and Islam into new lands in the early modern period. Parker argues these expansions transformed expressions of religious belief and observance throughout many parts of the world. These Abrahamic traditions also collided with Indigenous mythologies that were rooted in the landscape. Consequently, Islam and Christianity labored to transform sacred sites and their narratives as part of campaigns of conversion. They also introduced new relationships to the land that affected a range of issues, like labor, gender norms. Parker’s research suggests that missionary encounters not only affected the sites and people of conversion, but also wrought important changes within Islam and Christianity. Over his career, Dr. Parker’s work has focused primarily on the complex ways that individuals and communities in early modern Europe experienced and appropriated religious belief. His focus most recently has sought to uncover the global entanglements that reshaped all regions of the world. As part of that aim, he is now working on several projects that seek to uncover the influence of physical and cultural space on knowledge production and religious encounters. This research agenda is reflected in Dr. Parker’s most recent book, Global Calvinism: Conversion and Commerce in the Dutch Empire, 1600-1800 (2022), which focuses on Dutch Calvinism’s commitment to overseas missions and entanglements with commercial empire. As well, his previous book project, Global Interactions in the Early Modern Age, 1400-1800 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010) offers a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary introduction to cross-cultural encounters in the early modern age (1400–1800) and their influences on the development of world societies. Recently, Dr. Parker was also the recipient of a Huntington Library fellowship and recognized as a Felix M.
