Good morning everyone,
Please join us later this morning as we bring you the next presentation in the Entomology Fall 2026 seminar series! Dr. James Austin, Principal Scientist & Senior Global Development Manager - Insecticides with BASF in Research Triangle Park, NC, will be presenting "Outsmarting the World's Deadliest Animal: The Science, Innovation, and Impact of Interceptor(r) G2". The abstract for his presentation is below. This seminar is online only, but we will livestream today at 11 a.m. in 202 Entomology Hall and online via Zoom.
Abstract: Malaria remains one of the world's most devastating infectious diseases, despite decades of progress enabled by insecticide-treated bed nets. The emergence and spread of pyrethroid-resistant mosquito populations across Africa threatened these gains and created an urgent need for new vector control technologies. Interceptor(r) G2, developed through a public-private partnership involving BASF, the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC), global research collaborators, and major philanthropic organizations, represents the first dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated net and the first new chemistry incorporated into a long-lasting insecticidal net in more than 30 years. By combining alpha-cypermethrin with chlorfenapyr, Interceptor(r) G2 achieves improved control of resistant malaria vectors while maintaining personal protection for net users. This seminar will provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on the scientific discoveries, product development challenges, regulatory milestones, and field evaluations that culminated in the deployment of Interceptor(r) G2 across malaria-endemic regions. The presentation will also examine lessons learned from translating fundamental entomological research into a globally deployed public health intervention and reflect on the role that academic training and mentorship have played in shaping a career dedicated to solving real-world insect problems.
