Today, we are taking several actions: 1. We are extending the existing hiring freeze, refilling only those positions most essential to university operations; 2. We are developing a plan that reduces UNL’s permanent budget by $5 million this fiscal year, with units assigned a proportional share of the total reduction; and 3. We are initiating plans for an additional permanent budget reduction of $10 million to $20 million, in the event such a reduction is necessary early in the next fiscal year. A reduction of this magnitude must be driven by UNL’s strategic priorities, informed by performance metrics, and aligned with the NU System’s developing strategic plan<https://nebraska.edu/strategic-plan> and the needs of the state of Nebraska. We will use the time between now and June 30 to carefully weigh these factors and prepare for the additional reductions that may be necessary. In addition, we are closely working with our partners in Washington, D.C., to fully understand and plan for proposed changes at the federal level. Given this uncertainty and growing budgetary pressures at the state and institutional levels, we have also made the difficult decision to not issue new awards as part of the Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition. No new proposals will be accepted or funded in 2025, the initiative’s final year. These dollars will likely be needed to help bridge essential research infrastructure and services in the months ahead. Currently, we plan to continue to support active, multi-year projects awarded in 2022, 2023 and 2024, contingent on the availability of funds. I recognize the significant sacrifices we will have to make, as these steps follow a $12 million reduction finalized in January 2024, a $10.8 million reduction finalized in June 2023, and other reductions in our recent past. I also sympathize with the strain this places on programs and services, as well as our people that are being asked to do more with less yet again. While this message focuses on our expenses, we must also remember that budget reductions are not the only path to the future we all envision for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln as the state’s land-grant, flagship, research institution that is an economic, educational and cultural driver for Nebraska. As President Gold referenced in a recent message<https://nebraska.edu/president/speeches-communications/letters/2025/02/a-me…>, we face difficult decisions, but we also need the state’s and other supporters’ “continued partnership to uphold our promise to Nebraska: to remain a powerful engine of opportunity, education, and innovation.” The strategic, hard work we complete in the coming months can propel us beyond our current challenges and into a brighter future. Our future must be driven by mission and vision — and also revenue growth. UNL offers a high quality, personally engaged education for students, a place where faculty discover, innovate and create in ways that advance Nebraska, the nation and world, and a place that truly matters to what is important for all of Nebraska. To continue to do that: * We must grow our enrollment, continuing to increase the number of students we educate both from within and outside of Nebraska; * We must continue to make our compelling case to state leaders that there is no better investment than the University of Nebraska–Lincoln; * We must continue to work with our federal partners and others to ensure that they see the full value of the life-changing research and the life-giving and enhancing creative activity that makes us a hub of innovation and Nebraska spirit; and * We must continue to appeal to our alumni and friends, who are already so generous, but we are increasingly reliant upon as we face an uncertain financial future; Before I close this message, I want to thank you for your good work and continued dedication to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This is the second they have done this and in attracts over 500 people. This was not possible before Kiewit Hall. I hope all is well. Everything clicked into place and we got through a great event where all of the volunteers were well-fed (We accidentally ordered 22 too many pizzas), all high school students got to partake in all of the event across the basement and second floor, parents and visitors got to watch within the venue but also on our live streams, we handed out the nicest banner and trophy combination to our award winners out of all of the other events in Nebraska and surrounding states, got a bunch of RSO design teams to bring projects up to the second floor, got covered by 2 local news channels, and put it all away without a trace Saturday night. Volunteers who live in Grand Island kept asking me about the UNL event last weekend when I volunteered at Grand Island High School's tournament last Saturday, they didn't know I was involved when they asked and were excited about what they heard. Now that my classes and event supplies are back in order, I should have a nice set of highlight videos/pictures and event statistics to send out. The event didn't lose money this year (Margins are tight after custodial added an unknown $100's of costs 3 days before our event, they initially cleared it 2 weeks before the event and still haven't given a final cost) and ended up being the largest high school robotics event in the state of Nebraska. It was better than the first year and could still be perfected for the future. The event works physically going forward in Kiewit Hall (or Bob Devaney if we wanted to host a world qualifier instead of just a state qualifier) but I am uncertain about another event ever happening. I was the only member on the team taking event planning seriously and I would never wish that on anyone. There are a lot of intricacies to running a VEX event at UNL without taking massive financial losses, I don't know what could be done once I graduate in spring 2026. At the very least, these last two years of events have been the highlights of not only my year in VEX but also all of the competitors who attended. This event was initiated as a way for our club to gain funds form another source besides ESAB as events are primarily copy and paste once a setup is found (We are calculated to break even this year, future events will be profitable). The secondary goal of this event is to a provide a quality a tournament experience, the third goal are to promote UNL through recruitment, student volunteers, and showcasing other student club projects. If a team wins our event, they will be getting a custom trophy and large banner. The top 4 awards (There is a set of 4 awards from every VEX events all over the world) will also receive a qualification to state. Most of our 12 award winners will already be qualified for state anyway, teams are not here to qualify for state and the out of state teams cannot win an invite to their state tournament at a Nebraska event. All attending teams are excited for the event venue, the awards, us students involved as the college VEX team hosting, and are treating our event as the best event to practice at before state (Our event is going to be more competitive than the state tournaments of all 4 states individually). High achieving high school stem students, stem high school coaches, and parents will be in attendance and the main audience. The event is on February 1st, 2025 from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We will be cleaned up by 9:00 PM. We are utilizing the second floor for spectators, the competition fields, the student pits where they will spend time in between matches, and the practice fields (Identical fields to the competition that are first come, first serve). We are utilizing Kiewit Cafe for attendees to use and the open space on the first floor will be a space with our event livestreams running for those wanting a less dense space to attend. We are utilizing the basement for a simple volunteer room, judges room, staffed garage station for supervising power tool usage when modifying robots, and the open space to conduct a solo match called skills where robots score as much as they can in 1 minute. We expect 300-500 attendees which includes ~150 students, we will have an exact number of high school students after the event. We expect 40+ student volunteers. All, Below you will find a press release from UNL about this Fall’s enrollment. Overall, UNL’s undergraduate enrollment is up 1.8%. The College of Engineering’s total undergraduate enrollment is up 9.1%! This is due to a combination of increases in first time freshman, increases in retention rates, and increases in transfer students and reflects the efforts of all the staff and faculty in the college to make it a better place to study engineering, construction and computing. CONTACT: Leslie Reed, Director of Public Affairs, 402-472-2059, lreed5(a)unl.edu<mailto:lreed5@unl.edu> UNL ENROLLMENT GROWS, POSITIVE TRENDS SEEN ACROSS STUDENT BODY Lincoln, Nebraska, Sept. 9, 2024 — Fueled by strong recruitment efforts and a record-setting retention rate, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s student body grew to 23,992 students, an increase of 1.7%, according to the fall census of students taken Sept. 2. “This enrollment increase is a credit to the faculty and staff who have worked so hard to retain our current students and enroll new Huskers,” said Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett. “This is success that we can build upon as we press forward into a bright future for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.” This year’s class of first-time, first-year students from Nebraska hit 3,579, the largest in-state entering class since 2017. Among them is Emma Robbins, a first-generation college student from Morrill, Nebraska. Her journey to UNL reflects a broader trend of students making college choices based on the one-to-one connections forged during campus visits. “When I visited campus the second time, Jeff Beavers, who leads recruitment for the College of Engineering, remembered my name,” Robbins said. “Coming from a small town out in the Panhandle, that meant a lot. It helped me realize that I could find my community here, that this could be home.” Robbins also connected with the university by being a longtime participant in 4-H programming and taking part in orientation programs led by the Center for Academic Success and Transition. The student census, taken annually on the sixth day of class, recorded 19,305 undergraduate students registered for classes, an increase of 1.7% from fall 2023. The headcount also tracked growth in graduate student enrollment, up 1.3% to 4,064 students. Robbins is part of a record-setting enrollment of 3,722 undergraduates in the College of Engineering, a 9.1% increase from fall 2023. She said the strength of the civil engineering degree programs, along with investments made in the college, were important in her decision to become a Cornhusker. “Everyone knows that engineering is big at Nebraska,” Robbins said. “The facilities are incredible — especially the new Kiewit building. It is an amazing space and offers so many opportunities to students.” Other colleges seeing growth in undergraduate enrollment this fall include: > Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, up 2% to 2,156; > Business, up 2.3% to 3,825; > Education and Human Sciences, up 3.4% to 2,373; > Fine and Performing Arts, up 3.1% to 838; and > Journalism and Mass Communications, up 6.9% to 1,047. Student retention efforts are also reinforcing enrollment at UNL. Preliminary data indicates that a record-setting 86% of first-year students in 2023 have returned for their sophomore year. “We are thrilled with achieving the highest retention rate in UNL history,” said Amy Goodburn, senior associate vice chancellor and dean of undergraduate education. “It shows more UNL students are being successful and is a testament to the faculty and staff who have worked so hard to create belonging across campus — in classrooms, research labs, resource centers and residence and dining halls.” Additional metrics of note from the 2023 student census at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln include: > The student body continues to increase in ethnic diversity. All, Attached to this email is a list of equipment that we are planning on purchasing for the Garage on the 1st floor of Kiewit Hall. I was wondering if any of you might have connections with companies or vendors who sell this equipment and, if so, would you be willing to connect us with them. We are trying to get the best prices possible in order to stretch our dollars. If you know somebody, please let me know. I hope all is well.
