This message is for those of you who are still using a computer with the Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft has announced that they will stop providing security updates for Windows 10 on October 14th, 2025. We are reaching out to recommend that you upgrade to Windows 11.
If you'd like help upgrading, please email artscisupport(a)unl.edu<mailto:artscisupport@unl.edu> to make an appointment. This will automatically open a support ticket that goes directly to Melody and Saul -so there's no need to CC us.
Windows 11 is now available for upgrade through the Software Center on eligible devices!
Important: Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, security updates and technical support will no longer be available. Devices that are not upgraded to Windows 11 may lose access to certain campus services such as printers, network drives, and security features.
We strongly recommend upgrading as soon as possible to avoid any disruptions.

Before You Begin the Upgrade:
* The process takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete.
* Please save your work and begin the upgrade at the end of the day or when your device can be idle.
* Your computer will restart several times during the upgrade.
* Make sure your laptop is plugged into power and connected to the internet.

Why Upgrading Matters (Even If Your Computer Still Works)
Think of Windows 10 like a car that's about to stop getting safety inspections. It might still run, but if the brakes fail or the airbags don't work, no one's going to fix it. Eventually, it becomes unsafe - not just for you, but for others on the road.
The same applies to your computer:
________________________________
1. Security Will No Longer Be Updated
After October 2025, Microsoft will no longer fix security problems in Windows 10. That leaves your computer open to viruses, hacking, and other threats.
If your device gets infected, it can also spread problems to others on the same network - including colleagues, lab systems, and shared resources. It puts more than just your files at risk.

2. Less Support and Growing Compatibility Issues
As Windows 10 becomes outdated, you'll likely run into:
* Software and apps that stop working correctly
* Difficulty connecting to printers, lab equipment, or other devices
* Limited support options if something goes wrong

3. Windows 11 Is Built for Modern Systems
Windows 11 is more secure, faster, and works better with today's hardware. Upgrading helps avoid:
* Slower performance
* Freezing or crashing
* Compatibility problems with new tools and services

4. Protect Yourself and the Whole Department
Upgrading your computer helps keep our entire network safe. Just like maintaining your car keeps roads safer for everyone, upgrading to a supported system helps protect everyone you work with.
