Hello all - Hope your campuses are filled with the energy and excitement of students coming back and a new semester! Thanks for the great conversation at our meeting, here are the highlights: Carnegie Sustainability Designation * Attached is a copy of the questions being asked. Reach out if we need to have an additional conversation about this among those who are working on the designation. System-wide Data Tracking Platform * On-going discussion and search for best practices (or miracle…). Course Tagging & Data Tracking * Minnesota identified 275 community-engaged courses across 5 campuses via faculty survey; most lack the formal CEL attribute. * Wiping existing CEL designations this fall and rebuilding with consistent system-wide criteria (process took ~3 years). * Implementing GivePulse integrated with Canvas; shift toward faculty self-management with technical support and expanded faculty development. * Data currently cobbled from surveys, internship flags, field placement searches, and clinical rotation records. * This will be the focus of our October meeting. Co-Curricular Transcripts * Multiple institutions pursuing this initiative but no one has a working model. Fall Meeting Topics/Leads * September - Connecting with Deans — strategies for engaging college leadership; Jason Reece and Kathleen Lodl * October - Course tagging/CEL Attributes — Minnesota's landscape analysis work; Laurie VonEgeren * November - Engagement Model - Roberto Gallardo * December Zoom canceled — replaced by in-person meeting December 10 and 11. We will begin at 8:30 on December 10 and finish at 11:00 on December 11. Civic Research Agenda

Hello - You may have already seen this, but if not, here it is! I am writing at the request of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and MetroLab. They have launched a brief survey to gather input from the research community and hope you will complete and/or forward it. Their survey seeks to answer a central question: How do faculty and staff at universities approach collaboration with local government, and what would make research more actionable? FAS and MetroLab would appreciate responses submitted by Friday, August 21. Survey findings will be shared with the community later this fall. Background Earlier this year, MetroLab published the Civic Research Agenda<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://fas.org/initiative/civic-research-agend… >, a national report identifying priority knowledge gaps facing cities and counties. The report also examined how universities and local governments work together, highlighting perceptions, challenges, and successful partnership models. Building on that work, this survey aims to capture the perspectives of university faculty and staff engaged in research, community partnerships, and public impact efforts. Because the Civic Research Agenda is intended to reflect a broad national perspective, FAS and MetroLab encourage wide participation. So, in addition to potentially completing the survey, please also consider sharing it with colleagues whose work intersects with local government and community-engaged research. Thanks for your help! Working with/Funding through Foundation Partners * We spent time talking about how we might better leverage our Foundation partners in support of our work. One option is to have a couple of our most engaged foundation partners join us for one of calls to determine how we might best provide them information they could use to help us seek out interested partners. From there, we could each invite our foundation reps (if appropriate) to one of our meetings (maybe December F2F?) to have a discussion. Another idea is to join them in one of their meetings. If you have a Foundation rep who is already on board, think about whether they might be good to bring in for a conversation. Morgan, you thought you might have someone; there will also be others. Hearing from Current Outside Funders * It might be helpful to bring in an outside donor to talk about their interest in engagement work and how we best present that work to meet joint goals. We can talk about ideas you might have from your own institutions. The Impact Funders Forum might also have some information that would be helpful to us. Linkages to Carnegie Engagement Designation - As USD continues their evolution of the Carnegie Engagement Designation, we want to keep connected so we are on track with collecting the right data. We might also help inform them of how the questions asked in the certification/recertification process could be used for other accreditation purposes (both at the college level and institution - like sustainability) in order to value add to the process and not duplicate campus efforts. Engaging Deans * More intentionally engaging Deans in engagement work is a good strategy for campus institutionalization. We will continue to discuss strategies for doing that. A closer alignment between their needs and what we need for the Carnegie designation can be one way of connecting. How could we better leverage the civic and community engagement connection? Processes for Data Collection -All are in search of best practices and ways to ease the pain of data collection. Maryland has interest. Tagging Engagement Courses -Strategies and best practices for tagging courses and research projects to engagement continue to be a point of discussion. Best practices will be topic for this fall. On-Line Engagement Courses -Are their opportunities for offering on-line engagement courses for the public? Could be on how to engage with their institutions or how they might engage with their partners on a local level. Rutgers and Iowa and some ideas on this. Student Engagement -Questions that arise are around funding travel for off-campus engagement, tracking, telling the impact stories, etc. How do we ensure these are truly engagement experiences? Hello all - Thanks for the quick responses on dates for our F2F meeting. The best choice that matches availability of the Big Ten Conference Center is Thursday/Friday, December 10 and 11. We will begin at 8:30 on December 10 and finish at 11:00 on December 11. We can work on a draft agenda and details. Here are some other updates from last month, feel free to add what I’ve missed!
