Hello all,
We would like to remind everyone that the food pantry is a resource dedicated to supporting those in our community who are in need. It has come to our attention that some individuals may be using the pantry for personal use.
To ensure that we can continue to provide for those who truly need assistance, we kindly ask that you refrain from taking food from the pantry bin. Your cooperation is essential in helping us maintain this vital service for our community.
Best Regards, Susie

Hi Susie:
Thanks for bringing this up to our attention. I would worry if, say, faculty, were taking items from the pantry. However, this bin is for Husker Pantry (https://pantry.unl.edu/ ). All students, graduate and undergraduate, who may be in need, are welcome to take food from the bin. An estimated 23% of undergraduates and 12% of graduate students experience food insecurity nationwide (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://hope.temple.edu/npsas__;!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-... ), so I think we need to be mindful of whom is taking what items and in what amounts. If it's within the students' means to purchase food and personal hygiene articles, then I would hope they are not the ones taking stuff from the bin. Those with families and/or not eligible for food stamps/SNAP benefits (I mean, non-US citizens) should definitively be using Husker Pantry, if in need.
As a reminder to everyone, here are the ways you can donate to Husker Pantry, based on previous emails we got from Julie M. These links are still active.
* Drop off donations in the bin located in the 2nd floor lobby area outside the Administration Offices – a list of needed items can be found at https://pantry.unl.edu/donate . * Purchase some items off of the Amazon wish listhttps://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/27QON1JFP6Q94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_ws_OxA5BbZH8NA5D__;!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!Fs6Bknobn5aXqYnWJkfMgEnB_Vfu3cbHvN5qnRFAuX2wvAImvSwsXI-8gHuCFApXQhrxrZM-cI3gaYjDhKfwdwvp0IVgl47twdT0Zn4z$! They will be shipped directly to the pantry. * Gifts also can be made to the University of Nebraska Foundationhttps://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nufoundation.org/fund/01140700/__;!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!Fs6Bknobn5aXqYnWJkfMgEnB_Vfu3cbHvN5qnRFAuX2wvAImvSwsXI-8gHuCFApXQhrxrZM-cI3gaYjDhKfwdwvp0IVgl47twdpZbFip$, fund #01140700. Online gifts can be made via credit or debit card, and an electronic donation receipt will be emailed to you. Memorial gifts can also be made through the Foundation website.
Thanks, Byron

Hi all, I wanted to follow up on the e-mail below since it seems it caused some distress.
Items placed in the bin on the 2nd floor are collected to be sent to the Food Pantry. This is not the food pantry itself. The purpose of having a bin on the second floor is to help the Food Pantry collect items. Once the Food Pantry collects the items from the second floor, items are screened and checked for expiration dates and quality to ensure that we deliver good quality food to those in need. So, if you collect and consume items from the bin directly, we can’t ensure that the food is safe to consume. Unfortunately, many times expired items or items in opened packages are placed in the bin. We strongly encourage people not to pick items from the bin to ensure people’s safety.
Please understand that we strongly encourage you to pick up items from the Food Pantry if you have a need, but we discourage you from doing so from the bin located on the 2nd floor. The website for the food pantry is: https://pantry.unl.edu/ . You can check their hours of operation, and you can even place an order!
During our last faculty meeting somebody suggested asking the food pantry to have a location in NIC. I think that is a great idea and we will explore this further.
If you are in need and you can’t make a trip to the Food Pantry, please let me know. I am sure we can figure something out. If you are shy and want to make a comment or suggestion anonymously, you can always leave a note under my door or in my mailbox. I ensure you that we want to be here for everybody, especially those that are in need.
Thanks, Silvana
