Hello everyone! I hope you had a nice class last Saturday learning about traditional foods and indigenizing food choices. Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Plant Sciences classroom on the second floor. Before Class: Please read Chapter 5 of Braiding Sweetgrass on Asters and Goldenrod (skipping ch 4 for now). Please make notes / reflections in your journals. We will be discussing this Saturday together in class. Hello students! I hope you are enjoying this spring-like weather - my goodness - the sun feels so good! The garden season is so close - In a couple weeks, we will be starting thousands of seeds together 🙂 Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Plant Sciences classroom on the second floor. Friendly reminder that attendance is really important! In order to receive your stipends, each student needs to attend 70% of the classes each quarter. Before Class: There is no reading assignment this week - enjoy being outside! Hello students! Here is some important information about class this Saturday. Ted will be back! We look forward to seeing you! Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Plant Sciences classroom on the second floor. Before Class: 🌻 Indoor Garden Activity: * Before class, I invite you to think about these questions as we start planning the garden this week! * Do you have any favorite plants? * Do you prefer fruits or vegetables? * What fruits or vegetables interest you? To grow? To taste? * Do you prefer perennial or annual plants? * What are some culturally important plants/foods to your family? * What are your favorite meals - what are some ingredients that come from plants? * What are your favorite colors? 📕 Please read Chapter 3 of Braiding Sweetgrass The Gift of Strawberries before class and write down some of your thoughts and reflections in your notebook. Some questions to help get you started: * Have you ever received a homemade gift? How did it feel to receive it? Did you feel a deeper relationship or sense of responsibility to this homemade gift to a store bought one? Why or why not? * How in our modern world, can we find our way to understand the earth as a gift again? * What happens to our perception and connection to the world when we feel the natural world is communicating with us? Do you remember a time where you felt spoken to by the wind? The birds outside your window? The sun's rays shining on your face? How does this change your relationship with the world? What we will be doing: * 9am Cultural Teaching: The Gift of Strawberries. Hello everyone, I enjoyed welcoming everyone to the greenhouse last Saturday and exploring seeds - the elements they need to survive (do you remember some?) and their beautiful diversity (so many shapes, sizes, and colors!). How is your bag with the corn and bean seed? Do you notice any changes? *If you remember, please bring your bags back to class this week and we will see what is happening!* Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting at the Entomology #3 Greenhouse on East Campus at 9am. We have a special note to alumni students of the Indigenous Youth Food Sovereignty Program: During the winter months, we are asking that all alumni students of the program wait to attend class until the garden opens in the spring. Due to the limited space in the greenhouse and limited finances for lunches, we are limiting the class to new students and their families enrolled in the 2024 program. When the weather turns, we welcome everyone to participate in the community garden! We are working on something for alumni students to stay involved and connected with each other and an alumni garden program. Spring is just around the corner! This week we will continue to grow our relationships - with each other - with plants - with insects. First Class is Saturday January 20th - 2024 Indigenous Youth Food Sovereignty Program!

Good afternoon! This is a reminder that we will be meeting for the first class of the 2024 UNL Indigenous Food Sovereignty Program tomorrow Saturday, January 20th. Where to meet: Class will meet from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon in room 280 in the Plants Science Building on UNL’s East Campus (1875 N 38th St., Lincoln 68503). You can enter the building on the north side of the building by the parking lot, and then take the elevator or stairs to the second floor to room 280. Please sign in when you enter the room. Parents/grandparents are welcome to come in and attend the class as well. There is also a map attached. To bring on Saturday: * If you are a 2024 student or mentor, please bring with you your social security number (just the number written down, we do not need the actual card) so you can complete paperwork for your quarterly stipend. This Saturday, you will receive your UNL backpack and classroom supplies including the book “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Kimmerer an Indigenous botanist. We will be reading chapters from the book during the winter months. For this Saturday’s class, we will do the following activities: * Prayer and Teaching * Introductions * Icebreakers * Clans * Give-away of UNL supplies * Introduction of book “Braiding Sweetgrass” * Lunch and Announcements See you tomorrow!
