March 2nd Class Meets at the Greenhouse!

Hello everyone! My heart has been singing these past couple of days as I feel the warmth from the sun and get excited to start seeds! By growing our own food, we are building connections between ourselves and each plant we tend. This week we will be in the greenhouse - mixing up our own potting mix and starting seeds. Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Greenhouse and having lunch/ending class in the garden 🌿🌻 (see location in map attached or click here<https://www.google.com/maps/place/40%C2%B049'51.5%22N+96%C2%B039'29.4%22W/(a)40.8312533,-96.6587992,19.52z/data=!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d40.8309716!4d-96.6581564?entry=ttu>)!!! Helpful Notes: * When choosing clothes to wear to class this week: * We will be working with the potting soil - wear clothes you feel comfortable getting some dirt on 🙂 * Dressing in layers may help you stay comfortable! * The greenhouse will be warm again, but when we walk to the garden you may want a light jacket (high for the day is 73 degrees). Before Class: There is no reading assignment this year, but by all means, keep reading the book! We will continue to weave in chapters when we can. What we will be doing: * 9am: Meet at the greenhouse to start onions, strawberries, leafy greens, and some herbs! We will be mixing up (with our hands) our own potting mix and starting seeds. * 10:30/11am: Walk to the garden, visit the site, and eat lunch. * 11:30/noon: Lunch See you on Saturday! The bee houses are looking great – you will see these again in the Hoop garden, where we will be able to observe who takes up residence in them. Hello students! I hope you are enjoying this spring-like weather - my goodness - the sun feels so good! The garden season is so close - In a couple weeks, we will be starting thousands of seeds together 🙂 Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Plant Sciences classroom on the second floor. Friendly reminder that attendance is really important! In order to receive your stipends, each student needs to attend 70% of the classes each quarter. Before Class: There is no reading assignment this week - enjoy being outside! Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting in the Plant Sciences classroom on the second floor. Before Class: 🌻 Indoor Garden Activity: * Before class, I invite you to think about these questions as we start planning the garden this week! * Do you have any favorite plants? * Do you prefer fruits or vegetables? * What fruits or vegetables interest you? To grow? To taste? * Do you prefer perennial or annual plants? * What are some culturally important plants/foods to your family? * What are your favorite meals - what are some ingredients that come from plants? * What are your favorite colors? 📕 Please read Chapter 3 of Braiding Sweetgrass The Gift of Strawberries before class and write down some of your thoughts and reflections in your notebook. Some questions to help get you started: * Have you ever received a homemade gift? How did it feel to receive it? Did you feel a deeper relationship or sense of responsibility to this homemade gift to a store bought one? Why or why not? * How in our modern world, can we find our way to understand the earth as a gift again? * What happens to our perception and connection to the world when we feel the natural world is communicating with us? Do you remember a time where you felt spoken to by the wind? The birds outside your window? The sun's rays shining on your face? How does this change your relationship with the world? Class Saturday February 3 Begins in the Greenhouse!

Hello everyone, I enjoyed welcoming everyone to the greenhouse last Saturday and exploring seeds - the elements they need to survive (do you remember some?) and their beautiful diversity (so many shapes, sizes, and colors!). How is your bag with the corn and bean seed? Do you notice any changes? *If you remember, please bring your bags back to class this week and we will see what is happening!* Where we will meet: This week we will be meeting at the Entomology #3 Greenhouse on East Campus at 9am. It is just a few blocks north of Plant Sciences Hall off of 38th Street. We have a special note to alumni students of the Indigenous Youth Food Sovereignty Program: During the winter months, we are asking that all alumni students of the program wait to attend class until the garden opens in the spring. Due to the limited space in the greenhouse and limited finances for lunches, we are limiting the class to new students and their families enrolled in the 2024 program. When the weather turns, we welcome everyone to participate in the community garden! We are working on something for alumni students to stay involved and connected with each other and an alumni garden program. Spring is just around the corner!
